In the last two weeks we have had 1.6 inches of rain. No storms, hail, or damaging wind, Thank Goodness! We have had mostly cool days and are now getting a taste of heat. The grass and crops are growing like crazy.
J started cutting hay Tuesday. Most of the neighbors have started and the landscape is dotted with a few bales. In our area we generally get one cutting of hay and are concerned with putting up the most tonnage possible. Alfalfa isn’t typically cut untill it is in full bloom and the grasses are completely headed out. This year most ranchers are cutting alfalfa before it has a chance to bloom because of weevils. Alfalfa weevils are very damaging to the crop and are bad again this year. Good moisture has delayed the start of haying this year.
Last week J and his folks pulled bulls out of the bred heifers, fly tagged yearlings, and turned bulls out with the cows.
This week I have been assisting J after work. If I help him move equipment and give him a ride here, there, and home it saves him a lot of time.
