Wordy Wednesday – Ranch Roundup

Ranch Life:

In the last two weeks we have had 1.6 inches of rain.  No storms, hail, or damaging wind, Thank Goodness! We have had mostly cool days and are now getting a taste of heat.  The grass and crops are growing like crazy.

J started cutting hay Tuesday.  Most of the neighbors have started and the landscape is dotted with a few bales.  In our area we generally get one cutting of hay and are concerned with putting up the most tonnage possible.  Alfalfa isn’t typically cut untill it is in full bloom and the grasses are completely headed out.  This year most ranchers are cutting alfalfa before it has a chance to bloom because of weevils.  Alfalfa weevils are very damaging to the crop and are bad again this year.  Good moisture has delayed the start of haying this year.

Last week J and his folks pulled bulls out of the bred heifers, fly tagged yearlings, and turned bulls out with the cows.

My Life:

This week I have been assisting J after work.  If I help him move equipment and give him a ride here, there, and home it saves him a lot of time.

Do you think I can rember to grab my camera as I am running out the door?  Nope.  As I am helping J I see neat picture oportunities; then discover I don’t have my camera with me.

We have company coming this weekend!  Cleaning has been on top of my list.  Thursday I plan to mow and  Friday I want to do some baking.

Last weekend I tried two new recipes:

Dark Chocolate Blueberry Muffins from Jessica at How Sweet It Is.

Milky Way Cake from the Pioneer Woman

Other happenings in the kitchen included Lemon-Raspberry Muffins and Marsha’s Chicken Enchiladas .

I recently read Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen and hope to see the movie.  I am currently reading All Together in One Place by Jane Kirkpatrick

What is going on at your ranch or house?  Do you have plans for the 4th of July?

I can’t wait for the chicken enchilada recipe! it’s one of those things I like to eat, but don’t feel like I’m good at making.

How was the Milky Way Cake? It’s next on my “to-bake” list!
