Thankful Thursday – Books

I love to read!  I may have mentioned that before.  I am a passionate reader of all kinds of books, magazines, and blogs.  I think it is an inherited trait; my Mom and Sister are also enthusiastic readers.

I like to read books because they take my mind off the stress of life.  They let me escape into another world for a little while.  Books expose me to different characters and experiences that I can learn from and sometimes relate to.

Biographies and autobiographies always interest me.  The real life stories of some people are amazing.  So many people over come huge life challenges to become successful and influential individuals.  A few of my favorites include:

*The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses by Jeannette Walls

*Maya Angelou has wrote several books about her life story.

*Extraordinary, Ordinary People: A Memoir of Family by Condoleezza Rice

One of my most favorite authors is Larry McMurtry.  The Lonesome Dove series is awesome.  Mr. McMurtry’s assortment of western series and non-western books are filled with dramatic characters that make me laugh.

I am fascinated by survival stories from the Holocaust.  A couple of books I recommend are:

*The Zookeepers Wife by Diane Ackerman

*The Hiding Place by Corrie Ten Boom

After hearing rave reviews about the Twilight Series by Stephenie Meyer I read them.  This love story is captivating.

Sometimes I get a whim to read children’s classic (Where the Red Fern Grows by Wilson Rawls is a favorite), mysteries/suspense, or action books (I finished reading The Chase by Clive Cussler this week).  I never turn down a John Grisham book.  Other times I feel like romance and inspirational type books. I read self-help books, and books to learn or advance skills such as cooking and baking.  The Pioneer Woman Cooks by Ree Drumond is one of my prized cookbooks.

Whatever my mood I can usually find a book to lift me up, give me hope or help me zone out!  Make sure to check out my Reading List Page for more books and authors I like!

Sounds like we read a lot of the same books. I was captivated by Glass Castle–because the girl was born the same year I was. I would often think as I read the book how I was safe in my protected little world and a girl my age living not far from me was homeless or worse.
I have enjoyed listening to Audible Books, just finished The Help, Secret Life of Bees and Saving CeeCee Honeycut. The Unbroken is excellent.
I enjoy historical fiction and John Grisham too!
    Have a great week!
