A Surprise Birthday Party

Last Saturday J and I packed up the car and headed east river.  Miss J, KJ’s Sister and a Cousin along with KJ’s Hubby, Mike, and I planned and pulled off a surprise birthday party.

I don’t remember who came up with the thought, I think it was KJ’s Sister.  The initial idea was brainstormed on New Year’s Eve.  We kept it a secret almost a year. The first rule of surprise party success was not telling the kids.  KJ and Mike have 3 little ones and they were as surprised as she was.

Miss J was in charge of the menu.  We had a delicious line up of hot and cold savory and sweet dips and dippers.  Grinch Kabobs were a hit and so were the sweet snacks.  KJ’s Sister was our head shopper and helped with party invitations. KJ’s Cousin is a graphic designer and was recruited to make formal invitations.

I made the decor.  I took mason jars hot glued a strip of burlap to them and layered a strip of ribbon and/or colored raffia.  For an accent, I added a raffia bow or flowers.

Sunday morning we woke up to the wonderful smell of egg bake in the slow cooker. After dinner the guys headed out to hunt pheasants.  I went along to get some fresh air and capture some pictures.

A weekend with two of my closest girls was long over due.  We had a great time with our friends as well as KJ and Mike’s families.  It was really fun to come together and celebrate the birthday of a person that is so special to all of us!
